Insider tips - in and around Vienna

In order to show you a different side of Vienna and to give you information about the insider tips of people living in Vienna, some of the Altstadt Vienna's employees have gathered a couple of special recommendations for you.

My Vienna

When the sun is shining I love the chairs in the court of the MuseumsQuartier, or a walk through the Türkenschanzpark (18th district, reachable by bus 40A from Schottentor) or on Kahlenberg (19th district, reachable by tram 38 from Schottentor direction Grinzing, afterwards bus 38A).

My favourite restaurants
Figls (, across the street Francesco (, for traditional cuisine in a Viennese atmosphere Gasthaus Kopp (

For your evening plans:
Danube (cosy atmosphere and electronic beats at its base, this is Vienna's urban scene).
Roxy (situated right next to Karlsplatz, having a long history among Vienna's bars)

The Augarten (52 ha) in Vienna's 2nd district (reachable by underground line U2, Taborstraße station) offers more than meadows, flowers and alleys for a picknick. The entire garden, which is not only visually but also historically marked by two "Flaktürme" built during the Third Reich, is under a preservation order. It hosts a pool for children, the home of the Vienna Boys Choir in the Augartenpalais, as well as the traditional Augarten Porcellane Manufactury. Fine, hand-made porcellane is produced, and guided tours through the manufactury are offered.

The Augarten also participated for a few years in Kino unter Sternen ("cinema under stars") which movie lovers should not miss during the summer months. Since 2009, this open air cinema is taking place at Karlsplatz (free admission):

Adjacent to the Augarten is the Karmeliterviertel which is also called Judenviertel by the Viennese as many Orthodox Jews are living there. Although this quarter is centrally located, it gives the feeling of being a small, calm village. People can experience authentic Viennese life at the Karmeliter market, for instance when having a breakfast at the "Einfahrt". The owner was born in Vienna's 2nd district and supports local artists and musicians by hosting exhibitions and concerts in his café. It is a great place to talk and talk and talk...and forget time.

The ones who would like to get to know Vienna's typical night club scene can not miss out on Flex. For a long time the Flex had the best sound system of Europe, having international and national DJs on stage. Indie and Techno, Drum'n'bass and Hiphop - several music styles in this club, located in a former underground tunnel right by the Danube Canal, attract a wide range of people, dreadlocks join high heels. Experience sub culture!

Flair from the Caribbeans can be found at Floridita. Entering this club means entering a different world - colourful, loud and lots of fun. People watch others dancing while enjoying a cocktail, or go themselves onto the floor and get into the flow of Caribbean rhythms. Pros and amateurs dance together - those who participate, will have be entertained! Dancing lessons are also offered.

Our largest local holiday area is Danube Island, which separates with its 21 km in length the "new" from the "old" Danube. Once a year it hosts the famous Danube Island Festival, an open-air music festival (free admission) attracting three million visitors every year. It can be reached on the underground line U6, "Neue Donau" station, or the line U1, "Donauinsel" station. Close to this underground stop, there are restaurants and bars, boat rentals, as well as other sport facilities. People take a bath in the "new" Danube and swim over to the island. What I like most is walk along the huge island with its view onto the Danube and the nearby city. Parts of the island are a nature reserve and home of different kinds of animals on the land and in the water. A great place for nature lovers!
