Sleep in
Love
Paul Schneggenburger on his Vienna
The Viennese artist and actor has gained international acclaim for his photo project Sleep in Love. While participants previously slept directly in his studio, Paul now brings his interactive art to a suite at the Altstadt Vienna. In a word rap about Vienna, he reveals more about the city's darker sides and the intimacy of the night, which he captures through his project with us.
Why do you like the area? Why are you in the 7th district?
The primary reason I come here so often is, above all, the Altstadt Vienna. I love that my project Sleep in Love, which revolves so much around aesthetics, has found its new home in this beautiful and elegant location. Not to mention the wonderfully cozy Café Burggasse24 at Ulrichsplatz just around the corner – it’s fantastic!
What is the passion behind your work?
Sleep in Love is an extraordinary experience that seamlessly blends art, sleep, and photography in a magical way. With a museum-quality photograph, I invite people to take an active role in my art – becoming artists themselves for one night. The participants sleep in a specially prepared bed with black linens at the Altstadt Vienna.
An analog camera, mounted on a frame above the bed, captures a single long-exposure image of their sleep throughout the night. The outcome is a mesmerizing piece of art: all sleeping positions superimposed, merging into a single image without beginning or end – everything unfolds simultaneously. Framed and signed to the participants’ specifications, this artwork is then delivered directly to their homes.
To me, it’s pure magic. I’m passionate about creating something that transcends the boundaries of reality and inspires others. What I enjoy most is collaborating with others to craft something truly one of a kind.
Only in Vienna?
Probably the unique Viennese charm and wit.
Better elsewhere?
A starry sky and mountain air.
Sweet Vienna?
The freshest fruit juices and the sweetest mangoes await you at the Vitaminstation in the 2nd district.
Savory Vienna?
Autumn at the Prater: a truly unique atmosphere unfolds as the sun filters through colorful leaves gently falling from the trees. Perfect for a stroll and enjoying a bag of warm roasted chestnuts along the way.
After dark?
Filled with anticipation, I pack my camera and head to the Altstadt Vienna to welcome the participants of Sleep in Love and create their unique portrait.
Not in any tourist guide?
The Third Man Tour through Vienna's underworld is something I can warmly recommend – it’s an experience you won’t forget, even if it’s likely featured in a few guidebooks here and there.
Your favorite spot?
It changes every few years. Right now, it’s the Prater. Previously, it was the National Library, and before that, the Kleine Café on Franziskanerplatz.
A must-see?
Can be skipped, although in all the tourist guides?
The sausage stands.
What do you love about Vienna?
The high ceilings in old apartments – and old buildings in general. The Prater, the Danube Island, and as a passionate cyclist, of course, the many bike paths that Vienna has to offer.
