Local Heroes: Sandra & Othmar Schimek / OSME Gallery

The Altstadt Vienna lies in the middle of the trendy 7th district. Or as others call it: Boboville. Our portraits "local heroes" provide you with an insight of the real Vienna. Experienced by real Viennese. Our neighbours.

The ambassadors of art about heartbeats and exit ways

What do you like about the area? Why are you in the 7th district?

We moved back to Vienna from London in 2014 and had a closer look at various districts, before opening OSME Gallery  in the 7th in 2015. The flair is very special here and offers the creative atmosphere that we feel comfortable in. It's the proximity to absolute highlights of the city, like MuseumsQuartier or the Museum of Art History, but also to interesting districts like the Inner city, Mariahilf and Josefstadt, that makes Neubau the ideal place for us.

In the last 3 years there has been a lot of change going on, especially in Lerchenfelderstrasse - great restaurants like the „Goldfisch“ just opposite the gallery opened up and some really nice stores moved to our neighbourhood.

What can one buy in your store? What is your passion behind it?

Art. Art? Art! Our main focus is on painting and photography. But we also show sculpture and design. We have numerous changing exhibitions over the year. On the one hand we show young artists from Austria, on the other hand, due to our close relations to the international art scene in London, we bring established artists from all around the world to Vienna.

It is our great passion to find something special and show it to our audience. We show art pieces that let our hearts miss a beat. It's a wonderful feeling to see people who enter the gallery every day share that experience. We're seeking vivid conversations with everybody interested in art and want to convey openness.

Word Rap about Vienna

Only in Vienna:

The classic Würstelstand! In many cities they sell hot-dogs, but in our eyes nowhere as charming as in Vienna. Even if the grumpy temper of the ladies and gentlemen behind the counter comes with it.

Better somewhere else
:

We love to go to the Heurigen with friends! But we miss the unstrained atmosphere of pubs - it's probably easier somewhere else than in Vienna to start a conversation with someone you do not know.

Sweet Vienna:

The "Eszterhazy-Schnitte" at Café Diglas is very good. We also love the wonderful éclairs from tart’a tata in Lindengasse, the chocolate mousse at Café Oberlaa ... and could continue this list forever.

Hearty Vienna:

At Café Engländer they have "gebackene Blunzn" (deep-fried black pudding), the original tavern Wratschko in Neustiftgasse serve delicious Viennese dishes and you can never go wrong when you visit the Buschenschank in Residence by Jutta Ambrositsch!

When it get's dark:

Enjoy the beautiful view over the city from Cobenzl

Not in any tourist guide:

Not, that we have read each and every tourist guide - but we think that Glasfabrik in the 16th district is a good spot to discover some nice vintage furniture and antiques.

Your most favorite place:

On warm summer nights, it's gorgeous to sit in one of the outdoor dining areas near Piaristenkirchen. You can choose between Viennese cuisine from Café Maria Treu  or go for the Italian Restaurant Il Sestante. Both worth a visit.

Must-see?

Maybe not very surprising: we would always schedule some time for MAKMumok and Kunsthistorische Museum.

You can skip, although in the guide?
Overpriced souvenirs, that were presumably made in Asia.

What do you love about the city?

The broad cultural offer. The diversity of a big city, but without the exaggerated bustle of a metropolis. In summer, sitting near Donaukanal. In winter the short distance to the airport, to escape somewhere warmer.
