at Hotel Altstadt Vienna

Free-spirited, graceful lines, vibrant colours and timeless elegance: the extraordinary designs of the Vienna-born Wiener Werkstätte artist and Japanese by choice Felice (Lizzi) Rix-Ueno (1893-1967) have not lost any of their appeal even after a century - and are definitely worth a closer look.

Therefore, we have furnished four of our rooms and suites at the Hotel Altstadt Vienna with Felice Rix's unique wallpapers. Carefully recovered by Linden Co.Ltd Japan and handprinted in Great Britain using the original technique. The process is as unique as the designs themselves. The transfer of water-based, coloured fabrics onto a gravure roller creates subtle shading and a three-dimensional surface. The result is reminiscent of a woodcut, inviting you to touch it and conveying an irresistible warmth in the room. Experience this, for example, in the bathroom of our Grete Wiesenthal Suite. Or in our White Suite. Or with a look up to the ceiling in room number 16.

By the way, you can marvel at even more designs, drafts and works by Felice Rix-Ueno at the MAK in Vienna until 21 April 2024 as part of the exhibition STARS, FEATHERS, QUASTS. With around 200 objects, the museum offers a comprehensive insight into the richly shaped and colourful oeuvre of one of the most remarkable artists of the Wiener Werkstätte (WW), founded in 1903.
