The Altstadt Vienna was the first hotel in Vienna to be awarded the Austrian Ecolabel. For us, acting with the future in mind is simply part of good hospitality. Below, you can discover some of the ways we put this commitment into practice.
People have always been at the heart of everything we do. As a holder of both the Austrian Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel, we approach sustainability from a social, economic and environmental perspective alike. We strive to raise awareness, use resources responsibly and continuously reduce our ecological footprint.
By prioritising organic and regional products wherever possible, we care for your wellbeing, the wellbeing of our team and that of future generations. Sustainability only works together with our employees, our suppliers and of course our guests.

Skipping housekeeping today? By choosing to hang our Green Choice card on your door, you’re helping us save valuable resources – from the energy of our housekeeping team to cleaning supplies and laundry. As a thank you for your eco-friendly support, we make an annual donation to local charitable projects.For example to VinziRast am Land, Caritas, and Integrationshaus.

Our Team at the Heart of It All
For us, sustainability starts with the people who bring the Altstadt Vienna to life every day. A freshly prepared lunch brings the team together around one table each day, regular team meetings encourage open exchange, and long-term scheduling provides reliability and work-life balance. Through training opportunities, active involvement in shaping the hotel and annual team trips to European cities, we create space for personal growth, inspiration and a strong sense of community. To support wellbeing, we offer physiotherapy sessions and massages whenever needed. Full-time team members also receive an annual public transport pass, making sustainable mobility part of everyday life.

Regional Flavours, Thoughtfully Sourced
Many of the products we serve come from organic farming, fair-trade producers or long-standing regional partners. From organic bread, tea, milk and eggs to Viennese honey, fruit preserves, juices, Austrian wines and spirits, we consciously choose quality, seasonal variety and short transport routes. And of course, our breakfast buffet also includes a selection of vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options.

Social Responsibility
We see diversity as a strength. By promoting equal opportunities, diversity and gender equality, we strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. We also take responsibility for the next generation through apprenticeships and internships, with a particular focus on supporting refugees in their education and professional development. Beyond our hotel walls, we engage in social initiatives of our own and support external projects that make a positive impact. Because for us, sustainability also means contributing to a better and fairer society.

Conserving Resources
Using energy, water and raw materials responsibly is an integral part of our daily operations. We source 100% renewable electricity, continuously invest in energy-efficient equipment and LED technology, and work to further reduce our water consumption. Environmentally friendly cleaning products, climate-conscious building technology and the use of certified sustainable paper are just some of the measures that help us minimise our environmental impact.

Closing the Loop
The best waste is the waste that never occurs. That is why we focus on mindful purchasing, reusable systems and consistent recycling throughout the hotel. Any waste that cannot be avoided is disposed of responsibly and recycled wherever possible. Through our partnership with Too Good To Go, surplus breakfast items find appreciative new homes instead of ending up in the bin. At the same time, we actively involve both guests and team members in our environmental initiatives, because meaningful change is achieved through many small steps taken together.
Experiencing Vienna, Sustainably
Our sustainability efforts do not stop here. We also encourage our guests to discover Vienna in a way that is both authentic and environmentally conscious. Those arriving by train or bicycle receive a small welcome gift upon presentation of their ticket. Through our neighbourhood maps, insider tipps and the Local Heroes series on our website, we shine a spotlight on local businesses, cultural initiatives, public transport and the creative spirit that makes Vienna so unique.
