35 Years Altstadt Vienna
The Altstadt Vienna celebrated its 35th anniversary on June 12, 2026! It has now been 35 years since Otto Wiesenthal made his dream of owning his own hotel come true. It was one of the best decisions of his life, as he says himself. Numerous awards, loyal employees, regular guests, friends and companions prove him right.
And yet it was actually by coincidence that Otto Wiesenthal discovered the then vacant Pension Bellaria at Kirchengasse 41 in the seventh district. Back then, Vienna's 7th district looked very different from the neighbourhood we know today. No MuseumsQuartier. No specialty coffee shops on every corner. And very few people would have guessed that one of Vienna's most beloved boutique hotels would one day call this street home. Thankfully, Otto said yes anyway. He had the courage to follow a dream and create a place where people genuinely enjoy being. Not just to spend the night and move on. But to linger. To feel inspired. And to return. He created a house where people could truly feel at home. Guests. Team members. Visitors. A house filled with art, stories, encounters and personalities that inspire. A house that has continuously evolved while staying true to itself.
The Art of Hospitality. Since 1991.
While Otto is the founder and perhaps something of the hotel's grandfather, what has grown over the past 35 years was never the work of one person alone. It was shaped by many. By people who took ownership. Who shared their ideas. Who embraced responsibility. And who continue to make Altstadt Vienna what it is every single day. Otto likes to call it "management by absence." We call it trust. And that trust has created something that cannot be planned, designed or prescribed: an atmosphere that still feels like home.
In short: 35 Years of The Art of Hospitality. And perhaps that's the most beautiful lesson we've learned over the past 35 years: Buildings can be built. Rooms can be redesigned. Colour palettes can be updated. But a home is created by people.
