In our portrait series "Local Heroes" Cecilia and Susanna give us an insight into their personal Vienna.
What do you like about this area? Why are you in the 7th district?
We moved to the 7th district because it reminded us a lot of our life in Burgenland. The neighbors help you when you need something. You have friends everywhere. That's not normal in a city with 2 million inhabitants. We simply feel comfortable here.
Which products are you selling? What is the passion behind it?
At our shop Veganista we sell 100% vegan ice cream. It’s our passion to produce the very best ice cream with the best ingredients. No compromise. And we like to create crazy flavours like our „Best of Austria“- collection of apricot-dumpling, Germknödel- and Gugelhupf-ice cream! (sorry, no translation possible),
Only in Vienna
Cecilia: The „Wiener Schmäh“, a certain kind of humor. My husband is from Sweden and every single one of my attempts to explain it to him failed. He will never understand it.
Better somewhere else
Cecilia: In Vienna, you sometimes get the impression that you shouldn’t be too successful. I lived in Canada and the US. It’s quite different there, where it is „permitted“ to have success and people are even happy for you. Vienna definitely has to work on that.
Sweet Vienna
It's in the hood, in Burggasse a good friend runs the „Easy Going Bakery“. We love her vegan cinamon rolls and donuts.
Hearty Vienna
Well, yes, even that is possible in a vegan version. There is a typical Austrian „Heurigen“(wine tavern), the Feuerwehrheurigen Wagner in 19th district, that offers vegan traditional food.
When it gets dark
You should have a drink at the Sky Bar in Kärntnerstrasse. The view from up there is great and you can watch all the chic quests.
Not in any tourist guide
The Cha No Ma has been an insider tip for quite some time. It is a real Japanese Matcha store that offers the world’s best Matcha Latte.
Your favorite place
It’s again in our hood – my sister and I love „Erich“ in Neustiftgasse. You’ll need some patience to get a table in the outdoor seating area, but it’s worth it. You can reward yourself with the city’s best Gin Gimlet. In the worst case, you can always move on to the big brother „Ulrich“ next to the church.
Must-see
Whenever I come back from a longer trip, I walk through the first district. I love the narrow hidden streets with little shops and cafes. And once in your life, you should do the „Third Man Tour“ in Vienna’s canal system. Absolutely recommendable.
You can skip although in the guide book
Try to avoid tourist traps – way too expensive for bad quality food. Vienna has so many great restaurants, that should be experienced by the visitors. I would also visit the Naschmarkt on any other day than Saturday, where it is very crowded. Instead of booking a bus tour, take the public transport that brings you to all important sights within walking distance.
What do you love about the city?
I lived in many parts of the world, but nothing comes close to Vienna. Everytime I come back from a foreign country, the city’s beauty overwhelms me. The buildings, the parks, the stores, the restaurants. Compared to other big cities, Vienna is very clean and tidy. I think there is no other city where the streets are being washed in the morning.
