Suite XL #85 - Bed - Altstadt Vienna

Altstadt
Tour #85

Harry K Room

This spacious, cosy suite at the very end of the third floor at Altstadt Vienna has been part of the hotel for many years.  And for almost just as long, the inscription “Harry K Room” has graced the brass doorplate of Suite #85. But how is Harry? Why there’s a wall bar? And who owns the portable radio?

Listening to the old radio, cooking and feeling at home

Like most of our rooms, this suite welcomes its guests with high stucco ceilings and original parquet flooring. Following the slightly winding hallway, you arrive in a bright, open living area, where muted sand tones and warm walnut wood create a calm, contemporary atmosphere.

A distinctive feature of Suite #85 is its kitchenette – ideal for longer stays or when travelling with a little one. Staying here feels less like a hotel visit and more like being invited into a friend’s Vienna apartment. But it’s not just the kitchenette that creates this sense of home. It’s the carefully curated design pieces and the lived-in character of the space. You dine at a Thonet table, paired with Vitra chairs, beneath an Artemide Tolomeo Mega floor lamp. On the dark sideboard sits an old radio – once brought here by Harry for an extended stay, and never taken away.

Across the room, a light leather sofa anchors a quiet corner. A small wall of books, framed by Parentesi lamps by Flos, adds a personal touch. At the centre, two adjustable glass tables by Eileen Gray from the 1920s bring a sense of lightness and history. Nearby, the postmodern Wink chair by Cassina, an iconic design from the 1980s, adds a playful note, almost as if it were wearing a pair of Mickey Mouse ears. Miniatures by Vesna Muhr appear throughout the suite as subtle details that reveal themselves over time.

Red walls. And many stories.

Dark, sensual, theatrical. In the suite’s second-largest room – the bedroom – deep red walls set the tone. A round leather armchair, an antique desk with drawers, a Thonet chair and an oriental rug: everything evokes the atmosphere of Vienna around 1900. Above the armchair hangs a work by Xenia Hausner – a red-and-white cake set against a vivid blue background. The room’s centrepiece is a tall, deep-violet headboard with Chesterfield upholstery, designed for leaning back comfortably with a book in hand. In the bathroom, a cow by Dan Walker awaits. And in the hallway: an “Arnold Schwarzenegger” by Jonathan Monk.

„Anyone who starts bringing their own furniture has earned their own room.“

Harald Krassnitzer

The namesake, designer and frequent resident of Suite #85 is none other than Austrian actor Harald Krassnitzer. Over the years, he has not only lived here but also put down roots. For example, the climbing bars in the hallway aren’t a design choice but another item he brought along – for working out.
