Benedikt Stonawski and
Hauke Unterburg from

The Altstadt Vienna is located at the foot of the Spittelberg, in the middle of the trendy 7th district. Or as others call it: Boboville. Our "Local Heroes" portraits give you an insight into a piece of real Vienna. From the perspective of real Viennese, our neighbors.

Benedikt Stonawski and Hauke Unterburg - Local Heroes - Boutique Hotel Altstadt Vienna

Why do you like the area? Why are you in the 7th district?

Our studio is located on Kellermanngasse at Augustinplatz, and next to us were the premises of the Wiener Werkstätte. Creating in a place where Austrian design history took place right next door is particularly exciting to us. We're very drawn to the 7th district because almost every corner offers a historical and creative reference like this. The central location between Gürtel and Ring makes everyday life so versatile: within a few minutes' walk, we can reach both the Hofburg Palace and the Brunnenmarkt.

What are you selling? What is your passion behind it?

We're all about sustainable design: we create a wide range of products for companies, from furniture to glass bottles. We consult to raise awareness of eco-design principles, sustainable materials, and production methods. We develop sophisticated concepts and put them to the test in our workshop.

We also run our own collection of circular furniture and home accessories, sharing their story transparently—from the regional sourcing and processing of materials to product care, repairability, and reintegration into the cycle. We emphasize timeless design, smart constructions, and sustainable materials to create durable objects that always remain meaningful.

Our products are available online at www.anteup.at/store or in selected stores. Nearby in the 7th district, you can find Die Sellerie, which carries our products.

Only in Vienna

Summers on the Danube Island are unbeatable. The over 20 km-long strip stretches across the entire city, and from the city center, you can reach the recreational area in just a few minutes by subway. By bike, you can also access secluded swimming spots. Equally unique are the Heurigen (such as Weinhof Zimmermann - Neustift am Walde), the wine taverns in the outskirts, which often offer a wonderful view of the city.

Better elsewhere

The most classic answer is, of course: friendlier people.

Sweet Vienna

In hot weather, we love to visit the ice cream parlor Schelato around the corner and treat ourselves to creations like Sicilian lemon or pomegranate basil. Two classics that shouldn't be underestimated are also Malakoff cake and Punschkrapferl, which can be found in most Viennese cafés.

Savory Vienna

Our personal insider tip just around the corner is the Persian-Armenian restaurant Kolbe on Burggasse—delightfully unpretentious and authentic. The two owners are brimming with humor. For truly good ramen and a wonderful interior, head to Maka Ramen.

After dark

When there's something to celebrate, our first stop is always the Prosecco Bar, where Prosecco is poured straight from the tap (!). For the best cocktails in the neighborhood, we like to meet at Café Florida just around the corner. Plus, the U6 subway gets you to Usus am Wasser by the Danube in no time, where you can wrap up many an evening with live open-air music.

Not in any tourist guide

The canteen in the Justizpalast is a hidden gem. Once through security, you'll find the best view of the city center on the rooftop terrace.

Your favorite spot

On sunny weekends, it's worth taking a bike ride to the idyllic Lobau. During the week, we often walk to Weghuberpark for a lunchtime picnic. Enchanting and eerie at the same time: in spring, when the lilacs bloom, the old St. Marx Cemetery turns into one of the city's most magical places!

A must-see

When in Vienna... pee in style too: on Graben, right next to the Plague Column, you can take care of business in the city's last public Art Nouveau toilet. And since you're already near St. Stephen's Cathedral, it's worth visiting the medieval Virgil Chapel. The underground crypt is only accessible via the subway station and is a genuine, ancient piece of Viennese history.

Can be skipped, although in all the tourist guides

Eating schnitzel in the first district is the first thing to fly off our to-do list.

What do you love about Vienna?

The overwhelming variety of cultural events. There's always something to see, whether it's a spontaneous visit to one of the many renowned theaters or an exhibition opening. Boredom doesn't stand a chance!
